Hows this for Karma? I shipped out two packages just this morning, and when I get home, these are waiting for me on the doorstep! (The NES and Genesis games are to give you an idea for how massive the big box is) what's in the smaller box? A Luton Bowman PW203!
Lots of bubble wrap, it's packed really well! unusually, however, the bubble wrap is slightly moist. Was it dropped in a puddle or something?
No, that isn't how much I paid for the engine, although if it was, I'd have gotten the bargain of the century!
That can't be right, I ordered a steam engine, not these wheels!
Aha! there's the steam engine! but it was packed upside down for some reason. hm... also, the inner layers of bubble wrap were quite wet, not a good sign.
Here she is in all her glory! well, for the moment. It'll look a whole lot better when it's clean. also, notice the water streaks on the side of the boiler. That's right, it had been shipped full of water, and upside down! so it leaked water all over the place! Not too much damage was done, but needless to say, I was not very happy.
The first thing that struck me about this engine was the sheer size of it. to give you an idea of scale, that is an MM1 sitting on the baseplate.

The one thing that I like about this engine is the complexity, there are just so many fittings!
One of the features I really like on this engine is the pressure gauge, even though it is slightly spoiled by the rust mark from the needle.
The nice boiler face is the first place where the water damage shows up, mainly those rust spots.
The burner isn't totally missing, it's just been changed into a rusty old sardine tin.
The Fleishmann decal is in pretty good shape which is nice.

That exhaust tube worried me in the auction pictures, but luckily, the original exhaust pipe is still underneath.
Now we start to get into the problems with the engine. The whistle is a nice feature, but it's soldered into the boiler and most likely soldered shut, but I can't tell since there's no handle.
One of the more severe problems is this massive solder repair to the back of the boiler. It's not so much the repair that worries me as what's underneath it. Oh, and all of the fittings are totally seized. Great. My main concern now is getting all of them off and fixing the bad solder joints without ruining the nice blueing on the boiler.
Another problem is the rust on the firebox, perhaps a repaint would solve that.
The bottom of the base isn't too bad, just a little bit of corrosion/discoloration under the firebox.
The Lead weight for the Lever SV has suffered a bit of melting, unfortunately.
Another botched soldering job was performed on the steam valve.
The paint on the engine unit base is flaking pretty badly.

Well, I was expecting another shipment of Jensen parts today so I could get to work on the 5, but the postie refuses to get them here on time. So I decided to work on removing the seized fittings on the boiler
The Lever SV looked like the easiest fitting to remove as I can grip it with a crescent wrench. This engine must have been used in a very hard water area as the limescale is just crazy.
This is the entirety of the parts I could get off the engine. Yeah, it's that bad.
I did manage to get the lever SV out. So you know what this means! Time for a run!
